PAPER PLATE

LIMITED EDITION ZINE

LOS ANGELES FOOD CULTURE

$15

For renowned food capitals like Los Angeles, there is often a bias towards the sprawling, upscale, and extravagant restaurants. Though these restaurants have rightfully earned their accolades, this perspective narrows the greatness of the food that smaller, yet vibrantly cultured communities have to offer.

Paper Plate is a photo zine that brings forward another perspective.  Los Angeles is a mosaic of communities, historically rooted with family-owned and immigrant-led establishments. These communities take the ingredients accessible to them and create dishes that resonate with their culture and identity.  Chargrilled Tijuana-style tacos, tingly-spiced Sichuan noodles, sweet and tangy Filipino barbecue -  these are a few of many flavorful dishes produced locally and extending regionally.

If your curiosity brings you to these communities, you may catch on to the vibrant pulse running through them. From the hole-in-the-walls in unassuming strip malls to the street vendors popping up at local marketplaces, there is a lively and enriching experience in your everyday, paper plate meal.  These communities continue to live on, branching out with the next generations who strive to both preserve their roots and create ones anew.

I hope you find the curiosity to understand our communities and appreciate Los Angeles as a food capital in this meaningful way, one paper plate at a time.
